While the world is filled with social injustice, let us not forget the most egregious of all human injustices was the killing of Jesus Christ. But Jesus doesn’t say to us, “look at what they did to me, after everything I did for them”. What he does say is, “forgive them for they know not what they do”. Many people have died as martyrs but had peace and forgiveness in their hearts. Each beatitude points to something beautiful and Jesus asks us to find that beauty. As the Psalmist writes, “God’s steadfast love is even better than life”.
